MUGA Changing Rooms, London

Flowspace were appointed to develop proposals for changing rooms to a Primary School in South London. The facility, which comprises boys, girls and disabled changing rooms with toilets and showers, is to be used in conjunction with a new Multi-Use Games Area within the school. The changing rooms and MUGA are primarily for School use but the facility will also be available for the local community outside of school hours.

Modular solution

We collaborated with Portakabin to develop the units as a modular building solution in order to ensure high build quality and also minimize site works within the school. The buildings were therefore fabricated off-site and craned into position.

Two sides

The proposal combines two blocks of accommodation with a ramped circulation deck that doubles as a space to perch, spectate and cheer on the team. A timber over-cladding provides a hardwearing and durable façade overlooking the MUGA, which also extends to form a secure enclosure. In contrast we wanted the back of the building to be treated differently and this was originally conceived as a stage set and blackboard to the playground. Final proposals were modified and the building lined with mesh screens to be planted with climbers, creating a soft, green backdrop.
